Are We Outsourcing Our Brains? AI, Neuroplasticity, and the Lost Art of Thinking
Imagine sitting in front of a blank page with an assignment due tomorrow. You know what you want to say, but the words aren't coming. You stare at the page, search through your textbook, write a sentence, delete it, and try again. Eventually, after struggling with your thoughts, you manage to write something that is truly your own.
Today, there is another option. Open an AI tool, type a question, and receive a polished answer within seconds. It is convenient, impressive, and sometimes exactly what we need. But there is a question we may not be asking enough: When technology repeatedly does the difficult thinking for us, are we giving our brains enough opportunities to practice thinking for themselves?
Our Brains Are Not Fixed
The human brain is remarkably adaptable. This ability is known as neuroplasticity, which is the capacity of the brain and nervous system to change and adapt in response to learning, experience, and the environment.
Think about learning to ride a bicycle, play an instrument, speak a new language, or solve difficult mathematics. At first, these activities require a great deal of concentration. With practice, they gradually become easier and more automatic. Our experiences help shape the way our brains function.
This does not mean that the brain simply becomes "stronger" like a muscle. Neuroplasticity is much more complex. It involves changes in neural connections, networks, and brain function. However, one important idea remains: the brain adapts to what we repeatedly do.
The Problem May Not Be AI Itself
There is currently no good evidence that using AI simply destroys neuroplasticity. Saying that would be an exaggeration. The more interesting concern is cognitive offloading, which means using something outside our brains to reduce the amount of mental work we have to remember, process, or perform ourselves.
Humans have been doing this for a long time. We use calculators instead of doing every calculation mentally, maps instead of memorizing every road, and shopping lists instead of trying to remember everything. Cognitive offloading is not necessarily harmful. The concern begins when it becomes our automatic response to every difficult mental task.
Instead of thinking, "Let me try to figure this out," we may increasingly think, "Let me ask AI."
When Convenience Replaces Practice
Consider a student who has to write an essay. The student could spend thirty minutes organizing their thoughts, struggling to find the right words, making mistakes, and correcting them. Or they could ask AI to write the entire essay.
The second option is much faster. But the first option gives the student something important: practice. While writing independently, the student is retrieving information, organizing ideas, constructing arguments, choosing words, and learning how to communicate those ideas.
The struggle can be frustrating, but difficulty is not always a sign that learning is failing. Sometimes, the effort itself is part of the learning process. If we remove every difficult part of learning, we may also remove some of the opportunities to practice the skills involved in learning.
Receiving an Answer Is Not the Same as Learning
One of the biggest differences between using AI as a tool and using it as a replacement is what happens inside our own minds.
AI can give us a beautifully written explanation of a psychological theory. We may read it and think, "I understand this." But close the screen and try explaining the same theory in your own words. Suddenly, it may become much harder.
There is a difference between recognizing an answer and being able to produce an answer independently. The same applies to writing, problem-solving, and memory. When we actively retrieve information and construct our own responses, we are participating in the learning process rather than simply receiving the finished product.
AI Can Be a Tool for Learning
However, this does not mean that AI is the enemy.
Imagine two students. Student A asks AI for the answer every time something becomes difficult. Student B tries the problem independently first. When they get stuck, they ask AI for a hint, understand the explanation, and then try the problem again without assistance.
Both students are using AI, but they are using it differently. For Student A, AI may become a replacement for effort. For Student B, AI can become a learning tool.
This distinction is important. AI can explain difficult concepts, provide feedback, generate practice questions, help with brainstorming, and offer different ways of approaching a problem.
The question is not simply whether we use AI. The question is whether AI is helping us think or thinking instead of us.
Think First, Ask AI Second
Perhaps the solution is not to stop using AI, but to change the way we use it. We can try writing our own ideas before asking AI for help, attempt a problem before looking at the solution, ask AI for a hint rather than the complete answer, use it to quiz us instead of simply giving us information, and write an essay ourselves before using AI for feedback.
Most importantly, we can allow ourselves to struggle sometimes.
That moment when we cannot immediately remember something, find the right word, or solve a problem can feel uncomfortable. But we do not always need to escape that discomfort. Sometimes, struggling to think is part of learning to think.
The Brain Still Needs Us
AI can process enormous amounts of information and produce an answer in seconds. But human intelligence is more than producing answers. Thinking involves curiosity, questioning, creativity, judgment, reflection, and the ability to sit with a difficult problem.
Neuroplasticity reminds us that our brains are capable of change. That is precisely why the way we use technology matters.
We should be careful not to claim that AI is destroying our brains. The long-term effects of generative AI on cognition and brain development are still being studied. But we can ask a more practical question: What happens when we repeatedly outsource the mental effort that we could have done ourselves?
Maybe the greatest risk is not that AI will make us incapable of thinking. Maybe the risk is that thinking independently will become something we practice less and less because we no longer feel the need to do it.
AI can be an incredible tool. We do not have to reject it. But we should remember that our brains need experiences, challenges, and practice too.
So the next time we face a difficult question, perhaps we should pause before reaching for AI. Because the most important question in the age of artificial intelligence may not be, "What can AI do for us?" It may be, "What do we still want our own brains to learn to do?"
